1. Foreword
The end or goal of fasting is not to make us suffer, nor to make us observe
the rules faithfully and in the end, commit sin by quarrelling or boasting.
The purpose of fasting is to convert, to repent and turn away from the
worldliness of our being, and to enter into a spirit of love and communion
with God. We miss the point if we don't understand the laws of God with the
correct spirit of charity. ...

Homily on John 3:12-16 by John Chrysostom
Marvel not that I am to be lifted up that you may be saved, for this seems
good to the Father, and He has so loved you as to give His Son for slaves,
and ungrateful slaves. ...

Homily on John 3-17-20 by John Chrysostom
We do not pay the same penalties for the same sins, if we do wrong after
Initiation. And this Paul declares, saying, He that despised Moses' law
died without mercy under two or three witnesses; of how much sorer
punishment, do you suppose, shall he be thought worthy, who has trodden
under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the Covenant an
unholy thing, and has done despite unto the Spirit of grace? Hebrews

Christ Came Down to Be Lifted Up
We have lifted ourselves up in our sinful pride, even as the Israelites
lifted themselves up in their own eyes, and in so doing sinned against the
Lord and against Moses, and they were bitten by fiery serpents, just as Adam
and Eve were spiritually bitten by the great fiery serpent that is the devil
himself. ...

Illuminations - At the Cross of Jesus
I've been to a chapel without a cross. It was converted from an old factory. The
windowless inner "worship room" boasted electronic equipment for music and
videos, but no cross. There's something
wrong, in the sense of being crooked, bent, about a chapel without a cross.
Quite different is the wisdom of a remarkable five-part hymn by one Edward Monro:
"The Story of the Cross." ...

Astonishing Power of The Cross
Jesus has power over life and death as well as power to forgive sins. This
is because he is the Creator of life. He who is life can surely restore
life. Whoever believes in Christ has a spiritual life that death cannot
conquer or diminish in any way. ...

An Ordinary Cross
The symbol of the cross is an instrument of death. Far from ordinary, it
suggests, at the very least, a love quite beyond us. Perhaps it is we who
have become ordinary, our senses dulled to unconsciousness by the daily
matters we give precedence. ...
