Watching and Waiting
This Sunday's Gospel lesson reminds us once more that you and I are not in
charge of the timeline -- not the ultimate one or often even the ones that
seem ultimate in our lives. Indeed, we hear that even Jesus didn't know when
that day would come. But even in our not knowing --- perhaps especially in
our not knowing we are called upon to live in such a way that we are aware

coming of the Lord demands of us a certain fear and trembling. It requires
that we be cognizant of our own resistance to the things of God. It is a
reminder that too often we fail to pay attention. ...

Keep Awake
I believe with the witness of scripture that some day Christ will come again and
all things will be reconciled to God. But until that time, my prayer is to be
mindful, to stay awake in the present moment to the presence of God. I am going
to struggle with all my heart, mind and soul to follow the Jesus of the First
Coming who calls us to love, compassion, justice, unity and peace. ...
