Gospel Reading: St. John 2: 1- 12
As it is known to everyone, this Sunday is known as Kothine Sunday and colloquially Pethurtho. The significance of celebrating this day as a feast day with heaps of variety of delicious food on the dining table is also well aware to all. We know that our Lord had the first miracle at the house of Cana and the same incident is the main theme of meditation for this Sunday. Many of us consider this event as a miracle and in the view of theologians, it is only a sign. We should not forget the fact that all deeds of God Almighty are miracles for mankind, as those deeds are beyond the capacity of humanity. When we listen to the event as if we might listen a story, we might not attempt to grasp the spiritual side of the event. We might high light the invitation accorded to Lord Jesus, His disciples as well as St. Mary, Mother of God. The very purpose of incarnation of our Lord and Savior was the salvation of humanity of the past, present and future. With the beginning of our Lord’s Public Mission, actually there started the salvation process of the Redeemer. We should not forget the fact that the ‘salvation’ cannot be achieved in a day or two, where as it is a lengthy and slow process. A faithful could grow in salvation slowly and steadily. God Almighty has planned and implemented in such a system.
In the house of marriage at Cana, we find the transformation of creation in the presence of the creator. This is the first and foremost important event to take place in the process of salvation. When the servants filled the jars up lo the brim, it saw its master, Lord and Creator. The same thing happened when our Lord put his feet in the water of River Jordan to have baptism from St. John the Baptist. In the prayers of Holy Baptism, it is said “Lord, water saw you”. When water saw its master, it surrendered itself fully for the will of its master. Water tried itself to identify with the will and desire of its Lord. With the will of water, there took place a change or transformation. Our Lord did not say a single word to water. But still water responded after realizing its duty and responsibility. Where as our Lord spoke to humanity and exhorted “repent and believe the Gospel”.
Repentance is the change of attitude and mind. When we could attain freedom from selfishness, we get repentance. A faithful who is free from selfishness could only believe the Gospel. Our Lord’s offer of his own flesh and blood is the real Gospel. As our Lord entrusted the Holy Church to continue the sacrament till His second coming, the Holy church is doing so. It is our responsibility to accept the Holy Eucharist so as to attain abideness with our Lord God.
Almost all of us do partake the Holy mysteries every now and often. Do we respond to the will of God? If water was able to respond positively to the will of God, why can’t we also do? The water in the jars transformed as high quality wine. Our Lord used the wine in the place of His life giving blood to establish the Holy Sacrament. If we could respond to the will of God positively, we could transform ourselves as instrumental for His salvation process in a way or other. Let us try to participate with the mission of our Lord and Savior. Lets submit ourselves to His disposal.
May God enable us to make use of the coming days with richness of spirituality.
