Hope (ESPERANZA)

by Rev. Fr. V.V. Paulose, Toronto, Canada

Today's Bible Verse

“I waited patiently for the lord to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair. out of the mud and the mire.” (Psalm 40:1-2)

Discussion

Hope keep us to wait for anything at any length of time. Loss of hope will be the end of life. In time of winter, all animals, fishes, birds and plants go for hibernation, hoping to come out in the spring with more power and life. That takes place without fail. The children are the hope of the parents to move on with all the trials and tribulations of this life.

Resurrection is the hope for human beings that keeps them from mass suicides. It enables them to stand for truth, justice and non violence - eternal truth. The word of hope gives us encouragement in times of trouble. We live with the wonderful expectation of eternal life. Our hope is not just for the immediate future; our eternal life begins when we trust and join God’s family. The spirit of hope will make us to overcome all our frustrations and fears.

ESPERANZA is a Spanish word for HOPE. It was the name given for the daughter who was born to Ariel Ticcona, a miner trapped in San Jose gold and copper mine at Copiapo in Chile. 33 miners were trapped in the mine on 5 August 2010. They were rescued after 69 days. Seven times and 17 days the expert failed to find any sign of life in the mine but they didn't lose hope. At the 8 attempt, they got the sign of life and a note from the miners, "We are fine in the shelter, all 33 of us.” Outside world did anything to kindle hope. They named the camp HOPE, where the relatives and friends waited 69 days. Temporary prayer centre erected. One of the relatives explains. “There are 33 of them, and Jesus died and came back to life when he was 33.” Miners experienced the presence of God in the mine. They told to the outside world that they are not 33 but 34 – God is the addition. The miners' families said, “they’re convinced that the two month long ordeal has made the men spiritually serene enough to make the last phase easy.”

When we are in crisis or not, we need this extraordinary life preserving ingredient, ESPERANZA (HOPE) that God gives.

Prayer

Jesus, you are the fountain of hope. You are the hope for us. Jesus, help those who live in hopeless conditions, to live in hope and face the ordeal. Let us all live in hope for a brighter day. Thank you for the hope you have given today to do our work. We ask this in the name of Jesus.

Amen.
