Today with Jesus

Light and Darkness

by Rev. Fr. V.V. Paulose, Toronto, Canada

Today's Bible Verse

"The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world." (John 1:9)

Discussion

Do you stumble in darkness in your way of life?

When life doesn't go the way you wish, it's time for reflection of one's soul. Reflection is the self-observation and reporting of conscious thoughts, desires and sensations, especially one's soul. It's a spiritual examination. Daily reflection will infuse light into our souls and bodies to refresh the weary, depressed, hopeless, bewildered and barren life. Today, the world is in the grip of fear and indecision in facet of war, crime, natural calamities, economic down turn and scarcity of food that are slipping out of our control and calculations. So, it is high time for all nations and individuals to make a reflection of their thoughts, actions and lives. We cannot live without the light of God just as a plant can't live without sunlight. Every day, we must find time to sit and reflect on our daily life in front of Jesus who is the real light enlightening the world of darkness in the life of individuals and nations. "For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and seethes all his going" (Job 34:21).

The earthquake in New Zealand currently took 154 lives, but officers say it could rise to as high as 240, as dozens of people are missing. A 2 minute silence was observed exactly a week after the devastating Christchurch earthquake. Flags flew at half mast and traffic stopped as church bells tolled across the country. The only sound heard for those 2 minutes was that of weeping. "We gather to reflect in the precious gift of life," said Victoria Mathews, the Anglican Bishop of Christchurch. John key, the Prime Minister said, "This is a very dark moment for us but it's a moment that we will rebuild from. Obviously the earth quake was something beyond our control."

The word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish." (John 1:4,5)

Prayer

Jesus, we are your creation and you are the true light. Light all our dark areas of life. We pray for those who are in the grip of fear of life, due to jobs lost, illness, no children, ill-treatment, sins, natural calamities, war and pestilence. We pray for the victims in Libya, Egypt, and the people in New Zealand who are affected by the earthquake. All we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.
