Stillness of Mind

by Rev. Fr. V.V. Paulose, Toronto, Canada

Today's Bible Verse

"Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him to act" (Psalm 37:7).

Discussion

When feeling troubled, have you tried the 'stillness of mind' to feel better?

Stillness of mind amidst storms in life, is the way for God to act and stop them. Like how storms and tornadoes are part of nature, life is full of ups and downs, sorrows and tears, joy and peace, death and resurrection. People tend to take violent steps and put sudden brakes in the little slippery road of life to control the tempest in their lives, and usually the end result is disaster. The problems just get worse, and people become more sick and pessimistic. Life becomes a hell without peace, joy and love. The best way to control the storm in our lives is to be calm and allow God to act. Stillness is the best and only medicine for it. Slow down your life and be still, and wait for God to act - the result will be wonderful.

A gifted minister wanted to be a better Christian, a better preacher, and a better minister. Then at age of 35, his young wife died and left him with 3 children. In the memoir written by his friend, it says, "I think it is significant that he never entered another word in his diary after his wife's death. He recorded no more depressions, no more resolutions, nor scourged himself any more. He wrote to his sister, "You and I, both have gone wrong in feeling that we have to do it all ourselves. We go wrong in struggling and striving when we should be resting in God." It took him a long time and it wasn't easy, but he had discovered the secret of being still and knowing God.

Prayer

Drop thy still dews of quietness until all my strivings cease. Take from our souls, the strains and stress, And let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace. We pray this in the name of Jesus.

Amen.
