Devotional Thoughts for Christmas Day

by Jose Kurian Puliyeril

Gospel Reading: St. Matthew 2: 1-12

From the Holy Scriptures we learn that the humanity as a whole from the time of the first parents had been in the expectation of the Savior and at the time of incarnation of our Lord and Savior, they had an expectation about a Ruler who might be the King of Israel. Today’s reading explains that King Herod was much troubled due to the news of the birth of an infant, who might be the King of Israel in accordance with the prophecies until then He wanted to put an end to the life of the infant and that is why he had depended the wise men from the East to collect the information. In verse 8 we read, “And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.” Though he said that he also wanted to worship our Lord, his real intention was something else and for this there is no doubt.

We observe and celebrate the Christmas since generations. Christmas is a season of celebrations. These days people belonging to various faiths also celebrate the festival. We decorate our houses with lighted stars and illuminations etc. We arrange the models of the manger where our Lord incarnated. But we often forget to give the due importance to the new born. We might give equal importance for many other things other than the new born, whose birthday is celebrated.

We are supposed to confess our faith in Him who later proclaimed that He is the light of the world, the way, life and truth. Unless we do so, all our efforts to honor His blessed incarnation would be of no use. Let us try to confess to the new born “Lord you are my light, you are my way, you are my truth and you are my life.” Let us try to accept Him as our Lord and Master. He will bless us with the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

May the spirit of Christmas enlighten one and all in the days to come, especially during the blessed New Year.
