The Prophets' Call

by Fr. Dmitri, New Zealand

Saturday 9 October 2010 (29 Thout;29 Tute)
Holy Apostle John.

I heard the voice of the Lord saying: 'Whom shall I Send?'
'Here am I, I said; send me!'
(Isa.6:8)

CONSIDER THIS:

Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain
that build it.
(Psa. 127:1)

When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant
to your soul, Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will
keep you, to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man
who speaks perverse things.
(Prov. 2:10-12)

In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the
midst of the land of Egypt.
(Isa.19:19)

The lives, struggles, and virtues of the Saints have
marked their bones. Did not Paul the Apostle say,
'I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.'(Gal.6:17)
(St. Gregory)

Fasting is to rejoice when you see others finding food.
(St. Augustine)

Do nothing, and think of nothing without a goal acceptable
to God; for whoever travels without aim tires without cause.
(Evagrios the Solitary)

If you haven't received yet the gift of prayer and praises,
then be insistent and you shall receive.
(Evagrios the Solitary)

Reform yourself today for the sake of the morrow. Your
toil is short but your happiness is eternal.
(St. Augustine)

The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the
Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy
One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
(Luke 1:35)

All those who go down to the dust shall bow before
Him, even he who cannot keep himself alive.
(Psa. 22:29)

REFLECTION:

You ask what you might offer to God. Offer yourself! What
does God expect from you - except yourself?
Help us to discern through prayer and meditation what You
truly want of us. Then enable us to offer it to You - and
indeed to offer ourselves and all we have to You.
(St. Augustine)

HOMILY:

The Prophets' Call

"Here am I, send me." (Isa. 6: pt8)

Isaiah lived through a pivotal period of his nations history, the second half of the 8th.Century BC., which saw the rise of written prophecy in the work of Amos, Hosea and Micah, but also the downfall and disappearance of the greater part of Israel, the Ten Tribes of the northern kingdom. In Verse 5 he is in the depths of despair and declares himself to be unclean.

A Seraphim with a burning coal from the Altar of God places it on his lips. The symbol, applied to Isaiah's lips, the point at which his need was most pressing, assures him of Personal forgiveness.

Isaiah's 'Here am I send me' is remarkable considering his previous despair and that this human voice is accepted in the heavenly court. Isaiah fulfilled this commission to blind and deafen by proclaiming the Truth. God here shares with the prophet the critical significance of his ministry. Sinful Israel had come to the point, where one more rejection of the Truth will finally confirm them for inevitable judgement.

His dilemma is that there is no way of saving the sinner but by the very Truth, whose rejection will condemn him utterly. But there is a ray of hope and light. There after a long life of prophesying in troubled times, always persuading the Jews to trust, not in political alliances, but in God alone and that one day a Great King would come and establish God's reign all over the earth.

Here we have another Messianic Prophet. "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and His name shall be called Emmanuel." (Isa.7:14) This is the Branch of the root of Jesse and thus preserving the Davidic Line which God had told David would never be extinguished. Christ gets His Davidic Lineage through His Mother.

Let us hearken to the 'still small voice.' Samuel was someone who heard a similar voice when a young boy and thought it was Eli calling him. The finally Eli woke up to fact that it was God calling to Samuel. He told Samuel that when he next heard the voice he should say: 'Speak Lord for Thy Servant heareth.'

How many of us have heard a similar voice, not recognizing it and have failed to respond to the Call? How many of us have been like the foolish virgins and not been ready for the Lord's coming? We are always admonished to be Alert, because the devil goes around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.

If you hear that 'still small voice' won't you follow Eli's advice and say: 'Speak Lord for Thy Servant Heareth?' We ought to obey God and not man and keep His Commandments. The Psalmist says put not your trust in foreigners. May we be blessed and see the Shekinah Glory is my Prayer In His Holy Name. May Jehovah always be our guide.

To Thee be Glory and Praise, now and ever, unto Ages of Ages.

AMEN!
