“Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)
Forgiveness is the hallmark of Christianity. That is the panacea for all the ills of the world. Those who practice they can enjoy the joy of it. That could not be perceived by our natural senses. It is eternal. There is no justification for the excuse.
The present world is zero tolerant in all walks of life. That leads to strife, violence, and war. Are we going to the barbarian era of, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth? Is it the final countdown of the world? Antithesis of what Jesus stand for! Out of all this actions and tantrums, there is hope, in Christ, Christ alone, “the atonement.” “Forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”
Graham Staines who was burnt to death along with his two sons Philip (aged 9) and Timothy (aged 7) on 22 January 1999 in Orissa state, India. They were sleeping in their station wagon. The family was working in Orissa since 1965 as Baptist missionaries among the poor tribal people, especially with leprosy patients. Gladys, the wife of Graham Staines said “forgive completely those who killed my husband and children.” The true Christian spirit! She continues, “In forgiveness, there is no bitterness, there is hope. This consolation comes from Jesus Christ.” Still Gladys continues her missionary journey.
Lord, forgive all our wrongs and follies in our life, we committed knowingly and un knowingly. Give us your spirit of forgiveness. Let us all get the healings of forgiveness. All we ask in the name of Jesus.
Amen.
