Our Awesome Universe

by Rev. Fr. V.V. Paulose, Toronto, Canada

Today's Bible Verse

"Yet God had made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people can’t see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11)

Discussion

Are you overwhelmed by the vastness, complexity and glory of heaven and sky and the fragility and eternity of human beings?

Meditation on God’s creation uplifts human beings into the world of tranquility, peace, ecstasy and the plateau of silence. God reveals himself through nature. “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The sky displays his craftsmanship. Psalm 19:1-4 : "Day after day, they continue to speak, night after night, they make him known. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Yet their message has gone throughout the earth, and their words to all the world.”

From our meditation on nature, we learn about God’s power. When we look at the vast expanse of his creation, we wonder how God could be concerned for people who constantly disappoint him by their action of dodging into their cocoons of artificial electronic chips and no time to look on and mediate on his wonders and glory.

Psalm 8:3,4: "When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers- the moon and stars you set in place – what are mere mortals that you should care for them.”

The present generation is missing this glorious opportunity by completely cutting themselves, voluntarily or involuntarily from nature. Think of this: we have already discovered billions and billions of stars in the universe and we aren’t done yet. How awesome our God must be! Simply come out from our concrete jungle and go to the jungle of nature - the night sky and mediate the glory of God and his creation.

The crews of the space shuttle, Endeavour, has spoken with pope Benedict XV1 on Saturday, 21st May 2011 when the shuttle was circling the earth in space. Blessing the crews Pope said, “Our representatives are spearheading humanity’s exploration of space and the possibilities of our future . It must be obvious to you that we all live together on one earth and how absurd it is that we fight and kill each other.”

The shuttle commander told the pope that borders cannot be seen from space and noted that on earth people usually fight for resources. It's the thin layer of atmosphere that separates every living thing from the vacuum space. When we look down and see our beautiful planet earth that God has made, and realize how fragile we human beings are. However, if we look up, we can see that the rest of the universe is out there for us to explore. The international space station is just one symbol, one example of what human beings can do when we work together constructively.”

Genesis 1:1 : "In the beginning God created the sky and the earth.”

Prayer

Jesus, let us meditate on nature. Give us the time, health, mind and space to look on nature and meditate. Let us keep the pristine beauty and purity of nature. May the perpetrators and polluters of nature be stopped. We pray for all the volunteers and workers who are in the field of saving and preserving nature. Let us understand our fragility and appreciate your greatness. All we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.
