"The Truth shall set you free." (John 8:31)
Do you tell lies?
Humans are naturally programmed to be truthful, but
repeated lying makes telling lies easier and possibly undetectable, said Bruno
Verschuere, co-author of the study from Gent University in Belgium. Lie is
unnatural but people think they could and would live only with lies. So they
create an artificial world of liars. So we are in a world of confusion - what
the truth is. Jesus says, "I’m the truth, the way, and the life." He is the
source of truth, the perfect standard of what is right. He frees us from all
lies and stop us from telling lies. God’s people have a responsibility to speak
the truth, even when others don’t want to hear the truth. We should always speak
the truth in love. Suppressing the truth can incur the wrath of God. Liars would
never find peace and happiness here on earth and the world to come. "Who may
worship in your sanctuary, Lord? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill?
Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from
sincere hearts" (Psalm 15:1,2). For temporary material benefits, we shouldn’t
pawn our souls. It is better to solve this problem at an early stage and come
out of it.
Here is what M.K.Gandhi says about his experiments with truth, "I do not
remember having told a lie, during this short period either to my teacher or to
my school mates. There is an incident which occurred at the examination. Giles,
the educational inspector, had come on a visit of inspection. He had given us
five words to write as spelling exercise. One of the words was 'KETTLE'. I had
spelled it wrongly. The teacher tried to prompt me with the point of his boot,
but I would not be prompted. It was beyond me to see that he wanted me to copy
the spelling from my neighbor’s slate, for I thought that the teacher was there
to supervise us against copying. The result was that all the boys, except
myself, were found to have spelt every word correctly. Only I had been stupid.
The teacher tried later to bring this stupidity home to me, but without effect."
This man had broken the yoke of more than 200 years of British rule by truth and
non-violence and was gunned down for standing for truth.
Where are we, the Christians, the followers of Christ who are representatives of
truth? We are supposed to be the light to the darkened world of lies. Stop
telling lies under any circumstances. If you are the lone soul left, don’t be
afraid to die for truth because Christ is with you.
Jesus, help us to stand for truth and tell the truth always. We pray for the people who are in suffering because of their truthful behavior. The tormentors should be made to repent for their lies. Cleanse us from our lies and let your truth reign over us. All we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.
