Can you take tragedy for the sake of love?
This is what Jesus did for you and me. God's love is not static and self-centered. It reaches out to others. Here, God sets the pattern of true love, the basis for all love relationships. When you love someone dearly, you are willing to give freely to the point of self-sacrifice. God paid dearly with the life of his unique son - Jesus. God was born as a man, lived and died to save the people from their sins. So, we should be ready to give up our comfort zones and security for the sake of others who are in want of love.
According to James, this is the royal law found in the Scripture to be followed at any cost for the good of everything. We have no right to withhold this love from the unfortunate lot. We should show love to the unloved and help people with special needs in whatever way we can.
Saleena, a Cocaine baby is unable to hear, see, speak, or move. Destiny is a kid in a vegetative state. Both these children are orphaned and waiting for their death. Penny and Allen, a loving couple without kids, decided to adopt these babies knowing well the tragedy that could follow. They will never hear the children's voices and will never know their love. But they bathe them, change them, adjust their feeding tubes, drub their limps, and intermittingly suction their noses.
What kind of love is this? This is the love of Christ. We were just as helpless, in a spiritually vegetative state from sin. "Dead end, empty headed" (1 peter 1:18). Can we show this love to others? A challenge! The entire law can be summed up in this one command: "Love your neighbour as yourself" ( Galatians 5:14).
Jesus, we pray for the caregivers who work untiringly with the special needs people. Bless them and their parents that they may be made strong to take care of and to show unconditional love to these children. We ask this in the name of Jesus.
