There is almost nothing worse in the world than religious people who think they are holier or better or less sinful than other people. I love the limerick which says, "The power of hell is strongest when the odor of sanctity creates the smell."
Jesus' message is this: 'If you want to be great in God's eyes, put yourself in the lowest position.' The parallel passage in Mark's Gospel makes this explicit: 'If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.'
