About St. Ephrem Universal Syriac Orthodox Medical Mission/SEUSOMM

St. Ephrem Universal Syriac Orthodox Medical Mission/SEUSOMM is the social ministry of the Holy Syrian Orthodox Church. The Medical Mission is another achievement in two thousand year history of our Holy Church by our visionary and inspirational Holy Father, Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas. Our mandate by the Holy Father is to take care of the medical needs of our people and any needy people in this world at large.

The St. Ephrem Universal Syriac Orthodox Medical Mission is a nonprofit public benefit corporation. It is organized and registered under the California nonprofit organization in August 2006. Organizationally it is similar to the Red Cross.

SEUSOMM will provide on a completely nonprofit, non-sectarian basis, and without charge of any kind, quality medical care, including medical examinations, tests, surgical and other medical procedures, and hospitalization for children and adults, not only in the United States but also in the Middle East, India, Europe, Australia, South America and other countries.

SEUSOMM will strengthen the community fabric by creating and sponsoring community oriented events designated to increase public awareness of the importance of leading healthy lifestyles, including, but not limited to, providing public education about the need for quality medical care for all persons and the importance of of having regular medical examinations. SEUSOMM will also conduct 'health fairs' that are open to general public that will include medical check ups and advice.

SEUSOMM intends to provide scholarships and grants to help low income families who lack the financial and other means of support necessary to pay for their children’s higher education at a college, university, or trade school of their choice, in any medically related or other humanitarian profession of their choice.

SEUSOMM will receive and acquire by grant, gift, devise, bequest, or otherwise, public funding necessary to carry out the corporation’s charitable and educational purposes and activities. The funding may be in the form of real or personal property of any kind. SEUSOMM will hold, accumulate, invest, or dispose of such property and the income derived will be used in furtherance of the above charitable and educational purposes of this organization.

Progress Todate

Here are some steps that have been taken care of so far:

(1) SEUSOMM is registered properly in the State of California.

(2) With the blessings of His Holiness the Patriarch, His Beatitude the Catholicose opened its central office in Burbank, California in August of 2007.

(3) His Holiness the Patriarch officially inaugurated this Medical Mission at the grand opening ceremony in Ma’arat Sayednaya, Damascus, Syria, in July of 2008.

(4) A Chapter in the UK was established in October 2011

(5) Currently, the organization is in the process of establishing in about thirty countries where our Syrian Orthodox Church is rooted.

Looking to Future

We submit the Medical Mission for the prayer of St. Ephrem, the intercessor of this organization, who founded a similar organization by establishing a small hospital for medical care for public in the fourth century.

It is with the prayer of His Holiness and His Beatitude, and also the prayer and assistance of all those who wish to help and be a part to fulfill their commitment to God by helping others through love and according to our Lord’s commandment.

The very first project which this organization has adopted with the blessings of His Holiness is the relief work among hundreds of unsettled refugee families of Iraqi war. They are members of our Holy Church and are under the care of the Patriarchate. It is our moral and challenging responsibility to help out these innocent victims of war.
