Lord's Prayer - 1

by Fr. Dmitri, New Zealand

Saturday 15 November 2008 (6 Hathor; 6 Hatour)

Blessed are the single-hearted for they shall see God.
(Matt. 5:8)

CONSIDER THIS:

Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within
me bless his Holy Name.
(Psa. 103:1)

The important thing is that in our tribulations, we
gaze up high toward heaven to see the open door
and be comforted.
(HH Pope Shenouda III)

We shall live forever in the city where God is its
light and in whom we find that happiness which
we struggle now to obtain.
(St. Augustine)

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom
of God. Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
(Matt. 5:3-4)

Do not say this is a grace or a vengeance, but say it
can be changed into a grace or into a vengeance.
(Pope Shenouda III)

Man's prayer when he is hungry is more profound. Prayers
which are full of spirituality do not come out of a body full of food.
(Pope Shenouda III)

Whosoever fears God and keeps his commandments, is the
Servant of God.
(Antony the Great)

REFLECTION:

The surest and quickest way to attain perfection is to strive for
purity of heart. Once the obstacles have been removed, God finds
a clear path and does wonders both in and through the soul.

Heavenly Father, give us a heart that knows and seeks nothing
but You. Grant us the grace to keep our hearts free from all
worldly cares and intent on spiritual things.
(Anon)

HOMILY:

THE LORDS PRAYER:

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into Temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the Glory, forever and ever. AMEN! (Matt. 6:9-13)

I would like to share some thoughts on this Prayer over the next few weeks by breaking up the Prayer into sections. This prayer was twice given by Our Saviour, first to the multitude in the Sermon on the Mount and again some months later to the disciples alone.

The Breakdown will be as follows:-

1. Our Father who art in Heaven.
2. Hallowed be Thy Name.
3. Thy Kingdom come.
4. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven.
5.Give us this day our daily bread.
6. Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
7. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
8. For Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory.

OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN

Jesus teaches us to call His Father, our Father (Abba), He is not ashamed to call us Brethren (Heb.2:11) So ready, so eager, is the Savior's heart to welcome us as members of the Family of God. God loves us as He loves His Son. See 1 John 3:2; 1 John 4:16; and Romans 8:17.

If you call God your Father; you acknowledge yourselves as His children, to be guided by His wisdom, and to be obedient in all things, knowing that His love is changeless.

"Who art in Heaven". He to whom Christ bids us look as 'Our Father' , is in the heavens. He hath done whatsoever He hath pleased. In His care we may safely rest, saying, 'What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee. Psalm 115:3; and 56:3.

To Thee be Glory and Praise, now and ever, unto Ages of Ages.

AMEN!
